Sacred Threshold (diptych)
Gouache on watercolor paper.
8” x 10” (each panel)
In this diptych, I explore the theme of sacred abstract representation, drawing inspiration from
the intricate and rich traditions of Islamic architectural design. The vibrant color
palette—comprising orange, blue, purple, green, and gold—reflects the dynamic and diverse
nature of the world around us. Each color serves a purpose: orange for energy, blue for
tranquility, purple for spirituality, and green for growth. The gold accents symbolize divinity and
light, while the white border adds a sense of balance and purity.
This painting represents an abstract doorway, a symbol of both physical and metaphysical entry
points. In my work, the doorway serves as a metaphor for transition, the crossing of thresholds,
and the contemplation of the space between the known and the unknown. By employing gouache
paints, I created a depth that evokes a sense of both permanence and fluidity—blending the
traditional with the contemporary.
The composition, with its freehand symmetrical forms and bold use of color, is meant to invite
reflection. The viewer is encouraged to step closer and to interpret patterns as representations of
both the inner and outer worlds, offering a glimpse into the spiritual dimension that we all
navigate.
This piece is not just a reflection of architectural beauty but also a personal exploration of
identity, heritage, and transformation. The fusion of traditional motifs with modern abstraction
speaks to my ongoing dialogue with cultural expression and personal discovery.
